Energy Post and Shell introduce: the EUenergy App. When it comes to EU energy policy, no one needs to waste time anymore arguing about the facts. With this app, you will have them at your fingertips.
- Did you know that today’s total EU energy consumption is about the same as in 1990?
- Did you know that greenhouse gas emissions per capita have dropped almost 20% since 1990 in the EU?
- Did you know that Germany, despite its Energiewende, still accounts for a quarter of all coal consumption in the EU, the same as in 1990?
- Did you know that Poland, despite its reputation as coal country, has far lower per capita CO2 emissions than many other EU countries?
All of these insights – and many more – are revealed by the new EUenergy App. The App (only in the Apple store for now, Android version will follow) makes available, for the first time, public EU climate and energy data (based on Eurostat) in an easy to use format. It shows in an instant how national energy mixes and emissions have changed over time and relative to each other and to EU-averages. It also shows the evolution of electricity prices and gas market fundamentals. It is, in short, a great tool to follow the developments in the European energy market!
For Energy Post, the EUenergy app is the realisation of an idea that we have had for a long time: we wanted to offer something to everyone engaged in the great European energy debate (which now goes under the name of “Energy Union”) to fall back on. The idea behind the app is that when claims are made, arguments are put forward – in the European parliament, national parliaments, in the media, at conferences – no one needs to waste time anymore arguing about the facts. They can just look at the app and see what the data show. They are all official data, provided by the EU’s statistical agency Eurostat, but made accessible like never before.
Fortunately for us we were not the only ones who had this dream: so did the Brussels office of Shell. When Ivan Martin, Head of European Union Liaison, approached us with the idea for the EUenergy app, we did not have to think long. Hence the EUenergy app is a collaboration between Shell and Energy Post.
We hope you will like it (and apologies to Android users who will have to wait a little) and will use it a great deal over the next year, which the European Commission has promised will be “the Year of Delivery” when it comes to the Energy Union. The Commission, incidentally, has given its blessings to our app: Dominique Ristori, director-general of the Directorate-General for Energy spoke at the informal launch we held earlier this month in Brussels. Ristori said the app is a great initiative, supported by the Commission.

Although I have downloaded the itunes software to run on a PC – after that I am completely unable to open or use the “app”. ?? I’m puzzled?

Hi Mike, sorry for the confusion. The App version we have created only works on mobile iOS devices. That means iPhones, iPads and iPod Touch for the timebeing. We will follow up shortly with a version for Android devices which means most mobiles will be covered. The idea of a web version for PC’s is something we have discussed and would like to get into planning as soon as possible. But to get to your point about iTunes – you don’t need to download that to enjoy the App. That’s an option that Apple offers to anyone who arrives at the download point. iTunes (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ITunes) is an Apple App which acts as a library/download point for lots of different content (including Apps) and as a purchase point for the same. Hope that makes it clear. Enjoy the holidays, Matthew
