Turning Ethanol production’s CO2 by-product into E-Fuels using Wind power

With vast open spaces, Midwest states in the U.S. produce millions of gallons of ethanol from corn as well as thousands of kilowatt-hours of electricity from wind farms every year. EU: no CO2-emitting car sales from 2035. But beware of the small exemption for e-fuels

At the end of March, EU countries gave final approval to end sales of new CO2-emitting cars in 2035. It came after Germany argued for and won an exemption for cars running on e-fuels. 100% green shipping would add less than 10 cents to the cost of Nike trainers from China

Upcoming EU policies intended to cut shipping emissions would add just a few cents to the cost of goods all the way from China, says an analysis by T&E. Extending carbon pricing to shipping and mandating small amounts of green e-fuel use by 2030 will mean a pair of trainers would cost just €0.003 more, a television €0.03 and a refrigerator up to €0.27 more. E-fuels for cars are expensive, and pollute the air as much as petrol

MEPs and governments are currently deciding on an EC proposal for all new cars sold from 2035 to be 100% zero-emissions. Here, T&E present test results that show e-fuels should not be allowed to replace petrol. T&E are concerned that e-fuels are being promoted as a way to prolong the life of ICE vehicles. Giving car manufacturers e-fuel credits will slow the rise of EVs

If they are, it would give carmakers the option to claim an ICE vehicle as low- or zero-emission.
