A people-powered energy system: activating the community energy market for bioenergy

February 4, 2021 by Marine Perrio

Among others, lack of preparedness for communities to tap the full bioenergy market potential[1], lack of bioenergy stakeholders’ awareness of the potential of communities and missing/ unsupportive (local, regional and national) framework and policy conditions. For a people-powered energy system, the Horizon 2020-funded project BECoop (2020-2023) aims at putting communities in charge of their local renewable (bio)energy generation. … [Read more...]

U.S. innovative financing makes buildings energy efficiency affordable even to poor communities

March 14, 2019 by Nate Berg

Buildings energy efficiency is not moving fast enough to meet the Paris Agreement goals. Retrofitting old buildings is extremely costly and needs much more investment, as our previous articles have detailed. Innovative models of financing are urgently needed. In an article for Ensia, Nate Berg explains how by rolling upgrade costs into monthly bills for poorer communities, U.S. utilities are helping customers save energy and money at the same … [Read more...]

Transforming Heating and Cooling creates jobs, new businesses

March 5, 2019 by Mark Woodward

The UK has had great success in reducing emissions: down 43% overall since 1990. But, like most places, Heating and Cooling is struggling. Mark Woodward, of The Smart City Alliance and Nordic Heat, sets out a plan for progress, and includes lessons from Europe. The focus is on four core energy efficiency activities: reduce, recover, store and distribute. He explains how this also opens up new business models: in one town in Sweden chemicals firm … [Read more...]

Heat pumps vs boilers: renewables vs efficiency?

February 5, 2019 by Energy Post Premium

Heating and Cooling (H&C) is responsible for 50% of energy use in the EU and is still heavily dependent on fossil fuels. The opportunity to change your installed system won’t come up more than a couple of times before 2050 so the choice we make now has a large, lasting effect on the breakdown of the entire energy mix. H&C is the term used for the vast amounts of energy used to regulate the temperatures of the buildings we live and work … [Read more...]

A revolution: The Netherlands kisses gas goodbye – but will it help the climate?

June 7, 2017 by Eline van den Ende

Revolution in gas country the Netherlands: the Dutch government wants all residential buildings to be off gas in 2050. The objective is to reduce CO2 emissions from the built environment. But does phasing out gas deliver the expected results? Eline van den Ende spoke to experts and concludes that a ‘gas-less’ society makes sense only if additional measures are taken. … [Read more...]

Don’t throw out the energy efficiency baby with the Brexit bathwater

March 13, 2017 by Jan Rosenow, Pedro Guertier and Richard Cowart

Will Brexit put energy efficiency progress in the UK at risk, ask Jan Rosenow, Pedro Guertler and Richard Cowart of RAP (Regulatory Assistance Project)? In electric appliances and heating systems – probably not. The biggest risk is in the building sector.UK policymakers will need to put efficiency first if they want to reach carbon targets and keep costs down. … [Read more...]

Hamburg considers innovative heat storage scheme

February 8, 2017 by Jeffrey Michel

Institutions in Hamburg are proposing to build a large underground thermal heat storage system that could supply roughly a quarter of the city’s heating needs with waste heat from industrial and power plants. If successful, it would make Vattenfall’s plans to realise a CO2-neutral district heating network superfluous. It could also serve as an example for other cities. … [Read more...]

Interview Marko Delimar, IEEE: “Technologists need to demystify energy”

November 6, 2015 by Karel Beckman

“Right now renewable energy is still in the single digits in Europe. That’s a disaster”, says Marko Delimar, Professor at the University of Zagreb and Chair of the European Public Policy Group of the engineers association IEEE, the largest professional association in the world. According to Delimar, the energy transition is still at a very early stage. Technologists, he says, in an interview with Energy Post, have an important task: “We need to … [Read more...]

How the Nest thermostat will change the energy market

May 6, 2015 by Deborah Lawrence

The Nest thermostat is a deceptively simple piece of technology. But it’s already changing the energy market. It will not only save consumers money, but utilities even more so: it will reduce their need for gas peaker plants substantially, writes Deborah Lawrence, founder of the US consultancy group Energy Policy Forum. … [Read more...]

IEA: Clean energy progress falls well short of what is needed

May 5, 2015 by Karel Beckman

It is “realistic and economically sensible to pursue a clean energy agenda”, states the International Energy Agency (IEA) in a new edition of its annual Energy Technology Perspectives. But, it adds”: “clean energy progress is failling well short of the levels needed to limit the global increase to no more than 2 degrees Celsius”. Governments must do much more to stimulate the uptake of clean energy and energy efficiency technologies.  … [Read more...]

EU turns up the heat: finally, a policy push for heating and cooling (half our energy use)

February 25, 2015 by Clare Taylor

Heating and cooling accounts for almost half of primary energy consumption in Europe, yet it has been largely ignored in the EU’s climate and energy policies. This is now starting to change. At the end of this year, member states in the EU must submit an assessment of the low-carbon potential provided by co-generation and district heating systems. Clare Taylor looks at some of the EU-funded district heating and co-generation projects that are … [Read more...]

Heat pumps: waiting for the final push

June 5, 2014 by Sonja van Renssen

As gas faces a reputational challenge from Ukraine, electric heat pumps are emerging as a promising alternative source of heating. Heat pumps can also make an important contribution to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Oddly enough, although heating and cooling accounts for 45% of the EU’s final energy consumption there is no EU-wide heating and cooling strategy. Some countries such as UK and Italy are introducing support for individual … [Read more...]
