To set up our upcoming online event âChina: Carbon Neutral by 2060 -EFFICIENCY FIRSTâ we look at the profound importance of efficiency to the global energy transition. Energy efficiency is the âfirst fuelâ, meaning success here will make the decarbonisation of all the other sectors and technologies easier, faster and cheaper. Basically, use and waste less energy. Alyssa Fischer at the IEA starts by noting that their Sustainable Development … [Read more...]
The IEAâs World Energy Outlook 2020 at a glance
This month the IEA published its annual flagship World Energy Outlook (WEO). Simon Göss at Energy Brainpool picks out his highlights. This yearâs WEO has four scenarios, two of them new: an updated âStated Policies Scenarioâ (STEPS: what governments have promised), the new âDelayed Recovery Scenarioâ (DRS: due to Covid), an updated âSustainable Development Scenarioâ (SDS: whatâs needed to meet the Paris targets), and the new âNet Zero Emissions … [Read more...]
Oil & Gasâs future: diversify into clean electricity, new fuels, says IEA
The oil and gas industry is not doing nearly enough to meet Transition targets, says the IEA. Only 1% is invested in non-core activities. That needs to rise to 15% within 10 years. The IEAâs article summarises their comprehensive report âThe Oil and Gas Industry in Energy Transitionsâ, released this month. It explains how the industryâs existing skills and âdeep pocketsâ make them ideally placed to invest in low-carbon fuels (Hydrogen, … [Read more...]
IEA’s WEO 2019 scenarios wonât hit the Paris targets, again. It must start telling us what will
As always, the energy world is abuzz with reactions to the IEAâs annual World Energy Outlook, published yesterday. As always, itâs getting plenty of criticism from those who say it lacks ambition, and in doing so will again get quoted to justify support for continued reliance on fossil fuels, explains Kelly Trout at Oil Change International. The IEAâs most ambitious pathway, the Sustainable Development Scenario (SDS), gives a 66% chance of … [Read more...]
IEEFA: IEAâs Sustainable Development Scenario is not enough
The IEAâs Sustainable Development Scenario (SDS) â if itâs followed - sees the world limiting the temperature rise to below 2°C. Even if we stick to the plan the SDS gives us only a 50% chance of success. Tim Buckley at IEEFA says those odds are not good enough. Worse, the SDS depends on carbon capture and storage (CCS) achieving commercialisation at scale by 2030. The author explains why he thinks thatâs unrealistic, and calls for the IEA to … [Read more...]
